Tree Pruning & Trimming
COLONIAL TREE SERVICE
Proper tree pruning is the best way you can maintain healthy, safe trees on your property.
Tree pruning, or tree trimming, is a critical component of proper tree maintenance and tree preservation. Pruning improves safety by removing dead, diseased or dangerous branches that pose a hazard to people and property. Tree pruning can improve overall tree health and enhance the appearance of your trees, increasing the value of your property and enhancing curb appeal.
Tree pruning should only be performed by qualified arborists and tree care professionals. Improper pruning can damage your tree and lead to long-term health and structural problems.
Your local arborists at Colonial Tree Service employ a variety of pruning techniques to maintain the health and appearance of your trees. All tree pruning is done according to ANSI A300 Tree Pruning standards to reduce risk, manage tree health and structure, improve aesthetics, and/or achieve other desired results.
To accomplish these goals, our arborists employs the following tree pruning techniques:
Crown cleaning
Involves removing one or more of the following non-beneficial tree parts: crossing or rubbing, hanging, broken, dead and/or diseased branches
Crown raising
This process involves removing lower branches from the tree to increase clearance from the ground or other structions.

Crown thinning
A pruning technique employed to reduce the density of live branches. In laymans terms this means removing select branches from the crown to increase light penetration and air circulation.
Structural pruning
Structural pruning involves removing specific branches to encourage proper structural growth in younger trees.
Vista pruning
When specific branches are removed to create a clear view or "vista" through the tree. This technique is often used to provide views of landmarks, lakes, or other scenic views.
Crown reduction
Pruning to reduce the height and/or spread of a tree.
Restoration pruning
Pruning to redevelop structure, form, and appearance of previously improperly pruned, topped or damaged trees.
Each tree species has unique pruning requirements, and the specific pruning technique used will depend on the tree's size, age, and overall health. The ISA Certified Arborists at Colonial Tree Service can help you determine the best course for your trees based on their specific needs.
